Although it may seem like fun and games to preschoolers, the curriculum at Waverley Square Daycare is filled with educational elements. Games abound that teach pre-reading skills like phonemic awareness, letter/sound recognition, basic math concepts and hands-on science exploration. These activities are chosen to meet Massachusetts Early Education and Care statewide standards and recommendations by the National Association for Education of Young Children (NAEYC) for quality education experiences.

Meeting these goals is accomplished by learning while having fun with a Reggio Emelia inspired curriculum philosophy. Reggio Emelia inspired activities are about exploration and discovery; exploring with the senses, asking questions, testing theories, making plans and thinking deeply.
In our preschool, we incorporate the Reggio Emelia based approach in the following ways:

  1. The child is an active participant in learning.
  2. Incorporating the significance of environment.
  3. The teacher, parent and child are collaborators in the process of learning.
  4. Making learning visible.

Music and movement also play a significant part in our daily schedule, as does outdoor activities. Our goal is to help our children develop healthy minds and bodies while becoming well educated preschoolers!
